Bone autografts require several surgeries and patients may have a limited selection of bone suitable for grafting. A personalized, 3D printed scaffold with a 2D film that mimics the extracellular matrix can stimulate bone growth by releasing bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2). Initial studies in sheep models have demonstrated promising efficacy, with a lower dose of BMP-2 needed than in current clinical settings.
